Thank You Free Family and friends
in Memory of Robert F. Free
Robert Fleming Free was born January 19, 1933, in Augusta, GA, as the youngest of five children. He graduated from Swainsboro High School and immediately began a plumbing apprenticeship in Charleston, SC. He then enlisted in the US Air Force, where he served for four years, with one year overseas during the Korean War. Bob met the love of his life, Myrlene, while stationed in Harlingen, TX. They were married in 1954 and, after being honorably
discharged from the USAF, they settled in Savannah. Bob joined C&S Bank, where he worked for 34 years before retiring in 1989. Bob was a sports fan, enjoying golf as a long-time member of Lavida Country Club; he enjoyed volunteering as a coach for his grandsons’ and granddaughter’s baseball and soccer teams; he was a die-hard and long-suffering Ga. Tech fan, and he almost never missed Atlanta Braves and Falcons games on television. He was a longtime member of the Savannah Quarterback Club, and he served previously in the Savannah Jaycees. In retirement he enjoyed collecting used golf balls and equipment, and he was active as an officer in the C&S Retirees Club. He and Myrlene raised their grandsons, Justin and Jarad, during his retirement. Ultimately, he became active in local politics with his wife, and he served as delegate for the Republican party at local and state levels.
